I have heard about John Betjeman but have never read any of his poetry or heard any on the BBC. Apparently, he did a series of readings for the BBC in the 1950s which are not available anymore. Kevin Gardner though did some detective work and found the poems and published them in a book by the same name.

This week is the last week of “A Prompt A Day For Bee” and “frapalym,o” and I start to read “Poems in the Porch” to celebrate this. If you want to know more about Mr Betjeman, please have a look here.

My teaser was broadcasted in 1955, but it feels pretty up-to-date to me :-):

We raise the price of things in shops, 

We give plain boxes fancy tops,

And lines which traders cannot sell

Thus parcelled go extremely well.

We dole out bribes we call a present

To those to whom we must be pleasant

For business reasons.
