I was watching the first series of “Grimm” in the last couple of days.
If you don’t know what that is: A cop series with a fairy tale twist. Many of the characters are inspired by Grimm’s Fairy Tales but also other sources.
Today most know Disney’s take on fairy tales
Today most people know the fairy tale films and animations created by Walt Disney. In my opinion, these are watered down into a pink and fluffy version of the original truths taught by these stories.
Fairy Tales were stories about how humans experience life. They show the dangers that might befall you but also the strengths you can develop to deal with it.
Don’t get me wrong
Don’t get me wrong: I love a lot of the Disney versions of the fairy tales, but they have lost the ability to teach you meaningful lessons on how to deal with life’s challenges. And that is what they used to be.
Poetry has a similar task
In my opinion, poetry has a similar function. Poetry describes experiences, both positive and negative, that humans go through. They make sense like fairy tales do and therefore today will be a “Grimm Prompt.”
Grimm Prompt
I especially like the series take on “The Grimm Reaper”: Not a symbol of death for everybody but someone out there to kill members of the Grimm family. That has a lot of humour in it, in my opinion.
But how to put that into a poetry prompt?
Well, I suspect we all have our nemesis. Experiences or people who grimly reaped some of our innocence, some happiness or anything that is significantly important to us. These experiences changed us in the first place but expressing these experiences can be a very healing experience.
Yes, this is an extremely personal prompt. Fairy tales though have the ability to find symbols and characters that express the highly personal experiences in general terms. And that is what we are going to do this week.
Think about an experience that reaped you of something important, find symbols for it but also discover the strength that helped/helps you to deal with it. So we call this week’s prompt:
“Strengths I discovered through the Grimm Reaper.”
Suggestions on how to take part

- Write your poem as close or far from the prompt as you feel comfortable
