This is a talk that we should watch closely and ponder very carefully…
March 2018
Again I am going back to TED and a talk about tech businesses who fight for our attention.
I do love my mobile, I love to use Twitter, some game apps on the phone and an array of other social media and apps. However, what I do not like is the fact that they want to give me notifications continuously. So I decided to mute most apps on my phone and never allow notifications of pages on our laptop browser.
If I would allow notifications both on my phone and our laptop it would bing continuously. I would constantly sit in front of one screen or another and would not be able to spend any time with my family or do any creative work or housework.
Up until I saw this video I thought that is just a problem of mine loving the internet and the opportunities it gives me. Tristan Harris shows though that this attention-grabbing of our apps and social media sites is actually an essential part of their success: the more you watch videos on one site than another the more it makes that one site more successful than the other. It’s just part of the game.
However, we are creatures with something called free will and therefore we can decide to act differently if we are aware of what is going on. So here are some thoughts on how a handful of tech companies control our minds and what to do about it:

I don’t allow notifications except from email because those are important. No Twitter or blogging or social media popups on my phone. I’m not on any FB products whatsoever.

It is. I know I’m on a lot, too much, but some are on (or seem to be) even more. I don’t know how it is possible!

I am too and I check a lot but not continuously and not because a notification tells me to ❤🙋🐝

Thanks for the link!
All the tech companies are selling or time and attention–I try and remember that whenever I visit social media: it is hard to just stay on the 10 minutes I intended, and move on. Billions of tech dollars are invested to keep me on that page.

In a way, we should be proud that we are worth so much 😘 LOL. But you are right it’s difficult to stay away. I find the trick with no notifications on your phone and laptop works wonders 🙋

I never really thought about it! But that is so true! All the binging, notifying us, it immediately makes us check our phones! At least I know I do! xox

I have switched my notifications off because it distracted me so much. I only have Whatsapp on because it’s contact with family 😗🙋🐝
