Love Is In Da Blog 13 ~ A Love Song from 1979-1988 & Prompt Post for February 14th

Welcome back ladies and gentlemen,  let’s continue our musical time travel into the glorious ’80s 😉

I was a teenager in the ’80s and used to watch a chart program with a friend of mine every Monday evening. For the life of me, I can’t remember the name but it had a pink Isetta as a prop. The early ’80s were full of new German rock bands like Nena which you might know. But one of the first German-language rock bands were Ton Steine Scherben and I am a huge fan of their singer Rio Reiser who sadly passed away in 1996.

Both Rio Reiser and Ton Steine Scherben were connected with leftists political movements and supported the so-called squatting movement which was really big in Hamburg and Berlin. I remember the images of huge old houses where squatters looked out of the windows and the police tried to get them out. I didn’t understand much then but it already enraged me that people were evicted from houses that no one used anyway.

Maybe a similar movement will start soon here in the UK because homelessness has become a huge problem here with man families living in horrendous conditions even though the parents are working. Even though the bigger problem here is probably people who have second homes that they don’t use but which raise house prices so no normal earner can afford a home.

Ah, where is the love???? I digress. Sorry!

So, after I split up with my first boyfriend in 1987 I listened to a song by Rio Reiser called “Junimond” (June Moon). I was heartbroken and sometimes I saw my ex-boyfriend with his new girlfriend.  One of the lines of the song goes:” I see you coming but you pass me by” ah, and it made me cry every time. I love Reiser’s hoarse voice and his way of singing. It has never been smooth like ABBA’s for example but told the story of not fitting in, wanting positive change for everybody and the pain of lost love.

The song has had many covers since but the original is still the best.

JUNIMOND from SONGTEXTe.com

Die Welt schaut rauf zu meinem Fenster/The world looks up to my window
Mit müden Augen/ with tired eyes
Ganz staubig, ganz scheu/ totally dusty and shy
Ich bin hier oben auf meiner Wolke/ I sit up here on my cloud
Ich seh dich kommen/I see you coming
Aber du gehst vorbei/ but you pass me by
Doch jetzt tut’s nicht mehr weh/ But it doesn’t hurt anymore
Nee, jetzt tut’s nicht mehr weh/ No it doesn’t hurt anymore
Und alles bleibt stumm/Everything stays silent
Und kein Sturm kommt auf/ and no storm starts
Wenn ich dich seh/ when I see youEs ist vorbei/It is over
Bye bye Junimond/ bye bye June Moon
Es ist vorbei/ it is over
Es ist vorbei/it is over
Bye bye/bye byeDoch jetzt tut’s nicht mehr weh/But it doesn’t hurt anymore
Nee, jetzt tut’s nicht mehr weh/ No it doesn’t hurt anymore
Und alles bleibt stumm/ everything stays silent
Und kein Sturm kommt auf/ and no storm starts
Wenn ich dich seh/ when I see you

Es ist vorbei/ its over
Bye bye Junimond/ bye by June moon
Es ist vorbei/ it’s over
Es ist vorbei/it’s over
Bye bye/ bye bye

Zweitausend Stunden hab ich gewartet/ I waited twothousand hours
Ich hab sie alle gezählt und verflucht/ I counted them all and cursed them
Ich hab getrunken/ I drank
Geraucht und gebetet/ I smoked and prayed
Hab dich flussauf- und flußabwärts gesucht/ was looking for you up and down the river
Doch jetzt tut’s nicht mehr weh/ but it doesn’t hurt anymore
Nee, jetzt tut’s nicht mehr weh/no it doesn’t hurt anymore
Und alles bleibt still/And all stays silent
Und kein Sturm kommt auf/ and no storm starts
Wenn ich dich seh/When I see you

Es ist vorbei/It’s over
Bye bye Junimond/ bye bye June moon
Es ist vorbei/ its over
Es ist vorbei/its over
Bye bye/ bye bye

Es ist vorbei/its over
Bye bye Junimond/ bye bye June Moon
Es ist vorbei/it’s over
Es ist vorbei/ it’s over
Bye bye/ bye bye

Awwww the memories 🙂
