Hello out there, how are you? I hope you feel uplifted and if not I am giving you an instant boost today. You know that I am a bit of a tree hugger and love to share stories about planting trees. Today’s story tops everything though.

Piplantri is a village in India. And it is not your average Indian village. In a country that favours boys over girls because of India’s dowry system the good people of Piplantri plant 111 trees every time a girl is born.

Everything started in 2006 when their former leader, Shyam Sundar Palawal created a memorial for his late daughter. They wrote on the Good News Network:

Wanting to ensure the future protection and care of female children in the village, he launched a program that would not only enhance the local environment but also raise money for the girl’s family. The noble custom has endured for well over a decade.

In order to make sure that the young women are always provided for, the villagers come together to raise 30,000 rupees ($480) to set aside as her fund for the next twenty years. The parents of the child then reciprocate the gesture by signing an oath that their daughter will not be married until she has reached the age of 18 and will receive an education.

How utterly awesome is that????
