I was very lucky to grow up in a household full of music. My mother always had the radio on that played popular music in Germany of the time. It was both German pop & schlager but also music from the UK, the States and other European countries. She played the harmonium at Christmas and we could just not get to our presents before we sang at least one or two traditional Christmas tunes. We also listened to classical music at any of the holidays. The Christmas Oratorio by Bach at Christmas Time and The Messiah by Haendel at Easter. Us children grew up singing German childrens songs as well as old-fashioned songs of the seasons like “Hejo, spann den Wagen an“. And yes we tried to sing it as a canon or round. Then there was church which I started to attend around 1982. It gave me a lot of support and security while my mother was ill. I came to appreciate the old-fashioned chants and organ music that was played. Our church had some rather good organ players and a lovely organ. (There is a picture of it at that link but the text is in German). And then there was the turntable and vinyls. We had anything from Bach to the Beatles and Stones. And Simon & Garfunkel. As it happens, the recording of their 1981 Central park concert came out on February 16th, 1982 and so I thought I might as well chose one of their songs. I nearly gave you a playlist with all the songs as I found it rather hard to choose. But in the end I went for “Still crazy after all these years”. It’s not a song I used to listen to a lot but it rings so true for me now. Not exactly a love song either. Well, maybe a love song for a crazy life ;-).

It’s wonderful to grow up in a family with music. My dad listened to music popular in the 1950s and 60s. I appreciate you being flexible with your suggested topics since my one-liner Weds took the stream of consciousness to this song about God and Dog: https://joannaoftheforest.wordpress.com/2022/02/16/she-got-bit-by-a-god/
