Choose your own and new prompt: A Very Random Challenge ~ Love Is In Da Blog 2022

You guys and gals rock! Literally! Thanks so much for making “Love Is In Da Blog 2022” such a varied challenge and such a joy to be part of.

Today we choose our own and I find it really hard. There is so much beautiful music out there and I have been discovering lots more via last years “Eurovision Song Contest”. I haven’t watched it for years as I found it a bit too political and unfair in the 1990’s. But as a child and teenager we always watched it. I preferred it when you had to sing in your mother tongue even though I can understand that it might have given English speaking countries an advantage. For all those who are not familiar with this music competiton:

The Eurovision Song Contest is a music writing contest by the European Broadcasting Union that was based on the San Remo Music Festival. They started it as European event in 1956 and musicians like ABBA and Celine Dion have taken part over the years. Last year even Flo Rida helped the San Marino entry out. It was often quite controversial not only because of the entries themselves but of the voting system. There is a panel of professionals who give their vote but also the public can vote. For many years bigger countries had more impact and voted their songs through simply because there were more people who could vote for the entry. So often Russian entries or entries of countries that were close to Russia won. I am not sure if or how this has changed. You can find out more here at Wikipedia and at the Eurovision Song Contests own page. And if you want to know all the winners from 1956-2021 check out this video. You might be surprised how many winning contestants you actually know 🙂

Last year I stumbled over it because there was nothing else to watch on TV and I wanted to know if it was still so political. You could say that the UK entry getting almost no points whatsover could have been a “finger up” for Brexit because it was not a bad song at all in my opinion. But we won’t go down that route today 😉 . What really kept me watching was the Belgian entry: Hooverphonics are one of my favourite groups and I desperately wanted them to win. However, the winning song last year was a punk inspired Italian song by a group called Manneskin which was quite socially critical if you bothered to check out the lyrics. I liked that one too 🙂

Today I share “Hooverphonics” entry “Last Night” though.

Please enjoy 🙂
