I just read this book at the beginning of the year again. And it still made me think a lot about the state of the world and even read more about philosophy. Here are my thoughts from 2011:

I was in my twenties when I got “Sophies World” by Jostein Gaarder a Norwegian intellectual who is active in the human rights and the environmental movement.
The book is about 14-year-old Sophie who gets mysterious messages from Alberto Knox. Those messages more and more become a history of philosophy and I never expected that I would be so interested in it. Jostein Gaarder has the ability to explain complex philosophy in easy words for everyone to understand. In a way, the message of the book is: Philosophy gives the answer to the big questions of mankind!
Well, I don’t know about that but I know that a lot I read in this book shaped my thinking and still makes me think. There is, for example, Plato‘s Allegory of the cave!
In short, it is about prisoners chained in a cave who are only able to see shadows on a wall and hear echoes from that wall. As they have never seen anything else they take those shadows and echoes for reality even though they are men walking on a walkway in front of a big fire behind the prisoners. It made me realise that we see things differently depending on the situations we live in and grow up in and also how much and what we are taught and are able to read. In a way, there is not one reality but many. And I thought we need to start understanding each other’s realities to understand each other. I don’t know if that is really what Plato wanted to say with it but my interpretation makes sense to me.
The book in a way is another allegory of that allegory as Sophie’s world is a story by Albert Knag for his 15-year-old daughter Hilde who in turn also learns about philosophy. There is a story in the story which Sophie starts to understand in the course of the book.
I wonder if that book and that thought are what should be on the curriculum of schools all over the world. If children and teenagers keep understanding (I think they know that anyway but start to forget it) that their reality isn’t the only one they might not try to pressure their own views and lifestyles on others but start to become more open and tolerant and start to create a world that enables to live in freedom and peace.
Well, life isn’t that easy I know. But so much change throughout history started with just a dream or a thought.

Immernoch eines meiner Lieblingsbücher 😁

Ich habe dieses Buch am Anfang dieses Jahres nochmals gelesen und es bringt mich immernoch zum Nachdenken ueber diese Welt und hat mich dazu gebracht mehr Buecher ueber Philosophie zu lesen. Hier sind meine Gedanken von 2011:

Im Buch geht es um die 14 jaehrige Sophie, die mysterioese Nachrichten von Alberto Knox bekommt. Diese Nachrichten werden mehr und mehr zu einer Lehrstunde ueber Philosophie und ich haette nie gedacht, dass ich das so interessant finden wuerde. Jostein Gaarder hat die Faehigkeit komplexe Philsophien einfach zu erklaeren, dass jeder sie verstehen kann. Im Grunde ist die Nachricht des Buches: Philosophie beantwortet die grossen Fragen der Menscheit.
Keine Ahnung, ob das stimmt aber ich weiss, dass das Buch mein Denken sehr beeinflusst hat und einiges darin mich immer noch zum Nachdenken bringt. Da ist zum Beispiel das
Hoehlengleichnis von
Plato.
Kurz gesagt geht es darin um Gefangene in einer Hoehle, die nur Schatten an der Wand sehen koennen und Echos hoeren. Da sie niemals etwas anderes gesehen haben denken sie die Schatten und Echos sind Realitaet obwohl sie von Menschen die ueber einen Steg hinter den Gefangenen aber vor einem grossen Feuer gehen.
Diese Idee hat mir gezeigt, dass wie wir die Dinge sehen, darauf ankommt, in welcher Umgebung und wie wir aufgewachsen sind aber auch was uns gelehrt wurde und was wir lesen. Es scheint mir als ob es nicht nur eine Realitaet sondern viele gibt. Und ich dachte wir muessen beginnen die Realitaet des anderen zu verstehen um einander zu verstehen. Ich weiss nicht, ob Plato genau das sagen wollte aber diese Interpretations leuchtet mir ein.
Irgendwie ist das Buch ein anderes Gleichnis dieses Gleichnisses, da Sophies Welt eine Geschichte von Albert Knag fuer seine 15 jaehrige Tochter Hilde ist, die wiederum mehr und mehr ueber Philosophie verstehen lernt. Da gibt es eine Geschichte in der GEschichte, was Sophie nach und nach versteht.
Ich wundere mich, ob dieses Buch und der Gedanke auf den Lehrplaenen aller Welt sein sollte. Wenn Kinder und Jugendliche, nicht vergessen (ich denke sie wissen es eh), dass ihre Realitaet nicht die einzige ist, dann wuerden sie vielleicht auch nicht anfangen ihre eigenen Sichtweisen und Lebensstile anderen aufzuzwingen. Sie wuerden beginnen, offener und toleranter werden und vielleicht eine Welt gestalten, die es ermoeglicht in Freiheit und Frieden zu leben.
Natuerlich weiss ich, dass es nicht so einfach ist. Aber so viel Veraenderung in der Geschichte der Welt hat nur mit einem Traum oder einer Idee begonnen.
