Hello peeps, the sun is still high for this post and we are watching “The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs”. Yes, I know “Buster” is a B and even though he sings I do not approve of the ways of his life. So no highlighting of Western non-heroes, ey.

But just in case you wonder, we love weird Films 🤣 but that’s the theme for another A-Z I do not take part in 😎.

If I’d be taking part in A-Z I would mention I also take part in Mixed Music Bag so I already found 4 musicians starting with A but I want to share another 😁

So here we go:

I think I stumbled over Agnes Obel via one of the “Love Is In Da Blogs”. No idea, why I have such a thing for Scandinavian artists. If you are a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, The Shannara Chronicles, or Carnival Road you have heard some of her music already.

She lives in Berlin with her partner and she always makes me look back on my time there. Gosh, that was 22 years ago. Yes, the Wall and the death strip were still visible back then and I always feel weird that there are people on this planet who did not experience that time. Time flies truly.

But let’s find out a bit more about Agnes Obel. Blue Note writes about her:

A Berlin-based, Danish-born singer/songwriter and classically trained pianist with an elegant and elastic voice, Agnes Obel’s poised and melancholic chamber pop draws from the same atmosphere-heavy well as cinematic spellcasters like Antony & the Johnsons and Lisa Hannigan, but with a succinct aura of Scandinavian refinery. Her evocative blend of classical, pop, jazz, and electronic music found success in Europe on the strength of the platinum-selling Philharmonics and Aventine. Her ambitious 2016 release, Citizen of Glass, which introduced ghostly electronics, voice modulation, and a late-’20s monophonic synthesizer called a Trautonium into the mix, helped to establish her overseas as well.

Born Agnes Caroline Thaarup Obel on October 28, 1980, she took up the piano at a very young age, honing her craft amidst the strains of Bartok and Chopin emanating from the fingers of her musician mother. She later drew inspiration from the work of Swedish jazz pianist Jan Johansson, and it was between those two worlds that her own sound began to emerge. Citing influences as diverse as PJ Harvey and Claude Debussy, and drawing comparisons to the likes Ane Brun, Eva Cassidy, and Joni Mitchell, Obel’s 2010 debut, Philharmonics, was written (with the exception of a cover of John Cale’s “I Keep a Close Watch”), performed and produced by the artist herself. Pure, austere, and remarkably poised, the pristine mix of instrumentals and atmospheric, melancholy balladry was  both a critical and commercial success, especially in her native Denmark, where the record went double platinum. Composed, produced, arranged, and mixed by Obel herself at Chalk Wood Studios, 2013’s impressionistic Aventine was another commercial success, charting in nine countries. For her much-anticipated third studio album, 2016’s transparency-themed Citizen of Glass, Obel experimented with vintage synthesizers, as well as her own voice, which is at times heavily modulated.

That describes her quite nicely. I have listened to her “Late Night Tales ” which came out recently and it’s haunting. I chose “Riverside” for this post which is one of my favorites besides “The Curse” She often does quite long pieces but this one is nice and short. And filmed in Berlin my favorite city:

Ich glaube, ich bin über einen der „Love Is In Da Blogs“ auf Agnes Obel gestoßen. Keine Ahnung, warum ich so etwas für skandinavische Künstler habe. Wenn Ihr ein Fan von Grey’s Anatomy, The Shannara Chronicles oder Carnival Road seid, habt Ihr bereits einige ihrer Musik gehört.

Sie lebt mit ihrem Partner in Berlin und lässt mich immer wieder an meine Zeit dort zurückdenken. Meine Güte, das war vor 22 Jahren. Ja, die Mauer und der Todesstreifen waren damals noch sichtbar und ich finde es immer komisch, dass es Menschen auf diesem Planeten gibt, die diese Zeit nicht erlebt haben. Die Zeit vergeht wirklich schnell.

Agnes Caroline Thaarup Obel (* 28. Oktober 1980[3] in Gentofte, Kopenhagen) ist eine dänische Singer-Songwriterin und Pianistin. Ihr erstes Album Philharmonics erschien am 4. Oktober 2010 bei PIAS Recordings und wurde nach 10.000 verkauften Exemplaren im Juni 2011 von der Belgian Entertainment Association (BEA) mit Gold ausgezeichnet.[4] Bei den Danish Music Awards im November 2011 gingen fünf Preise an Agnes Obel, unter anderem in den Kategorien Bestes Album und Beste Newcomerin.[5] Für ihr drittes Album Citizen of Glass erhielt sie 2016 den IMPALA Album of the Year Award.[6] Ihr Stück Familiar wurde Titelsong der kanadischen TV-Serie Cardinal.
