At last, I get to show you the Joni Mitchell video. She brought a new one out for her song “River”, which I discovered in 2016 for Song Lyric Sunday then still hosted by Helen, and it inspired this poem

moonlit band
curls through
my soul
full of shadows

I never realised it is a bit of a Christmas classic. It only mentions the Christmas decorations going up, but otherwise is about a break-up of a relationship

“River” is a song by Canadian singer songwriter Joni Mitchell, from her 1971 album Blue. Written on piano, it has become a standard for artists in many music styles, and has become popular as Christmas music. Although never released as a single, “River” holds second place among Mitchell’s songs most recorded by other artists.[1] In 2021, it was ranked at No. 247 on Rolling Stone’s “Top 500 Best Songs of All Time”.[2]

Background and composition
The song is about the recent breakup of a romantic relationship, with the singer longing to escape her painful emotional bonds. It is thought to be inspired by Mitchell’s 1968–1970 relationship with Graham Nash.[3] Although the song is merely set near Christmas time, rather than being about Christmas, it has become something of a modern Christmas standard. Writer Will Blythe believes the song is connected to a visit to Chapel Hill that Mitchell made with then beau James Taylor and a caroling session with his family, the Taylor family, and Mitchell.[4]

The piano accompaniment to the vocal borrows heavily from the tune to the 19th-century winter song “Jingle Bells”.[5]

Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass es ein bisschen wie ein Weihnachtsklassiker ist. Es wird nur die Weihnachtsdekoration erwähnt, aber ansonsten geht es um das Auseinanderbrechen einer Beziehung

Der Autor Will Blythe glaubt, das Lied sei von einem Besuch in Chapel Hill inspiriert, den Mitchell mit ihrem damaligen Verehrer James Taylor machte.[4]
