Happy Thursday, all despite everything. I didn’t think I would find so many river songs. I also didn’t think that they would remind me so much of Dr Who :-). Remember River Song????

Ah, I liked Matt Smith as the doctor, and River Song is such a charismatic character. Well… mum and daughter are red-heads. What do you expect? (Can you hear me laugh manically 😉 )

But there is no K in sight and no music either, so we better go back to earth and see what today brings. If I’d be taking part in “Blogging from A-Z”, I would share a lovely song which was created by Donovan and first sung by Mary Hopkins. Yes, those were the days, my friends 😉 . The version I am using is Kate Bush’s though

It is a quiet ballad that tells the story of Leda and Swan. Leda is a character from Greek mythology who is seduced by Zeus in the form of a swan. She is also the queen of Troy and the mother of Helen. It’s mythology, and lots of different versions are out there, so I am not going more into it.

Looks like Kate Bush is not only running up that hill and sending love letters as Babooshka. She also likes to sing the odd ballad. I love her voice. I love her songs and think it is great that she is in “Stranger Things”, too. I am still at series 3, so not there just yet.

Catherine Bush CBE (born 30 July 1958) is an English singer, songwriter, record producer and dancer. In 1978, at the age of 19, she topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks with her debut single “Wuthering Heights”, becoming the first female artist to achieve a UK number one with a self-written song.[1] Bush has since released 25 UK Top 40 singles, including the Top 10 hits “The Man with the Child in His Eyes”, “Babooshka”, “Running Up That Hill”, “Don’t Give Up” (a duet with Peter Gabriel), and “King of the Mountain”. All ten of her studio albums reached the UK Top 10, with all but one reaching the top five, including the UK number one albums Never for Ever (1980), Hounds of Love (1985) and the greatest hits compilation The Whole Story (1986). She was the first British solo female artist to top the UK album charts and the first female artist to enter the album chart at number one.[2]

Bush began writing songs at 11. She was signed to EMI Records after Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour helped produce a demo tape. Her debut album, The Kick Inside, was released in 1978. Bush slowly gained artistic independence in album production and has produced all her studio albums since The Dreaming (1982). She took a hiatus between her seventh and eighth albums, The Red Shoes (1993) and Aerial (2005). Bush drew attention again in 2014 with her concert residency Before the Dawn, her first shows since 1979’s The Tour of Life. In 2022, “Running Up That Hill” received renewed attention after it appeared in the Netflix series Stranger Things, becoming Bush’s second UK number one and reaching the top of several other charts. It also reached number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and its parent album, Hounds of Love, became Bush’s first album to reach the top of a Billboard albums chart.

Bush’s eclectic musical style, unconventional lyrics, performances and literary themes have influenced a diverse range of artists. She has received 13 Brit Awards nominations, winning for Best British Female Artist in 1987, and has been nominated for three Grammy Awards.[3][4] In 2002, Bush was recognised with an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. She was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to music.[5][6] She also became a Fellow of The Ivors Academy in the UK in 2020.[7] That year, Rolling Stone ranked Hounds of Love at number 68 on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.[8] In 2021, “Running Up That Hill” was also listed at number 60 in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.[9] Bush has been nominated four times for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2023.[10][11][12][13] She is listed on VH1’s 1999 “100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll” at number 46.[

Aber es ist kein K in Sicht und auch keine Musik, also kehren wir besser zur Erde zurück und sehen, was der heutige Tag bringt. Wenn ich bei „Blogging from A-Z“ mitmachen würde, würde ich ein schönes Lied teilen, das von Donovan kreiert und zuerst von Mary Hopkins gesungen wurde. Ja, das waren noch Zeiten, meine Freunde 😉 . Es ist eine ruhige Ballade, die die Geschichte von Leda und dem Swan erzählt. Leda ist eine Figur aus der griechischen Mythologie, die von Zeus in Form eines Schwans verführt wird. Sie ist auch die Königin von Troja und die Mutter von Helen. Es ist Mythologie und es gibt viele verschiedene Versionen, also gehe ich nicht näher darauf ein.

Sieht so aus, als würde Kate Bush nicht nur den Hügel hinaufrennen und als Babooshka Liebesbriefe verschicken. Sie singt auch gerne die eine oder andere Ballade. Ich liebe ihre Stimme. Ich liebe ihre Songs und finde es toll, dass sie auch bei „Stranger Things“ dabei ist. Ich bin immer noch bei Serie 3, also noch nicht da.

Ihr Bruder machte Bush 1973 mit David Gilmour, dem Gitarristen der Band Pink Floyd, bekannt. Gilmour, der auf der Suche nach Nachwuchstalenten war, erkannte ihr Talent und förderte fortan ihre Laufbahn. Er nahm mit Bush einige Demotapes in den AIR Studios mit dem Tontechniker Geoff Emerick und dem Produzenten und Arrangeur Andrew Powell auf. Im Juni 1975 stellte Gilmour Bob Mercer von EMI, der Plattenfirma, bei der auch Pink Floyd unter Vertrag waren, die Demobänder vor. EMI schloss im Juli 1976 einen Vertrag mit der 18-jährigen Bush für zunächst vier Jahre.

Bush zog vom ländlichen Welling nach Lewisham an den Stadtrand von London um, wo der Vater ein Haus besaß, das bereits von den beiden Brüdern bewohnt wurde. 1976 besuchte sie die Performance Flowers des britischen Tanztrainers von David Bowie und Tänzers Lindsay Kemp und nahm ein halbes Jahr Tanzunterricht bei ihm. Ihre Tanzausbildung setzte sie bei Arlene Phillips fort. Parallel arbeitete sie an der Komposition von Liedern für ein Album. Ihr Bruder Paddy stellte eine Band zusammen. Die als KT Bush Band gegründete Formation bestand aus ihrem späteren langjährigen Lebensgefährten Del Palmer (Bass), Brian Bath (Gitarre) und Vic Smith (Schlagzeug) und gab Bush Gelegenheit, ab April 1977 erste Bühnenerfahrung mit Coverversionen in kleinen Pubs und Bars zu sammeln.

Frühwerk – Die Produktionen mit Andrew Powell (1977–1979)
Im Juli 1977 begannen in den AIR Studios die siebenwöchigen Aufnahmen für das Debütalbum The Kick Inside, das Anfang 1978 erschien. Bush und Andrew Powell, der schon die Demoaufnahmen produziert hatte, wählten die Songs aus und stellten eine Band aus Sessionmusikern für die Aufnahmen zusammen. Die Band bestand aus Mitgliedern von The Alan Parsons Project: Ian Bairnson (Gitarre), David Paton (Bass), Stuart Elliott (Schlagzeug) und Duncan Mackay (Keyboards). Als Toningenieur betreute Jon Kelly die Aufnahmen. Mit The Saxophone Song und The Man with the Child in His Eyes enthielt das Album zwei der mit Gilmour und Powell produzierten Aufnahmen von 1975.

Bei der Auswahl der ersten Single setzte sie sich gegen Bob Mercer durch. Im November 1977 wurden erste Promotionexemplare von Wuthering Heights an britische Radiosender verteilt. Im Januar 1978 erschien die Single und im Februar 1978 folgte das Album. Bush stellte die Single im selben Monat zusammen mit der KT Bush Band (mit Charlie Morgan am Schlagzeug) in der ersten Show der ARD-Sendung Bio’s Bahnhof von Alfred Biolek vor und wurde damit auch im deutschsprachigen Raum bekannt.[1][2] Kurz danach trat sie auch in der britischen Popsendung Top of the Pops auf.[3]

Die Single kletterte im März an die Spitze der britischen Singlecharts. Das Album erreichte im April Platz drei. In den deutschen Charts erreichte die Single Platz elf und das Album Platz 21. Das Presseecho war geteilt; der Presse fiel es schwer, Bushs Single und Album in ein bestimmtes Schema einzuordnen. Als zweite Single erschien Ende Mai 1978 The Man with the Child in His Eyes, die im Juni Platz 6 in den britischen Charts erreichte….
