Linda’s “Stream of ConsciousnessSaturday” prompt today is: onomatopoeia. If you are as confused as I was in the beginning, please feel free to visit literarydevises.net, whichoffer you a pretty good explanation.

What is Stream of Consciousness Saturday in short?

But first a few words about “Stream of Consciousness Saturday” or short “SoCS”: It is Linda’s weekly prompt that you can use just to write ahead with no editing. Of course, you can change the odd typo, but as a whole you don’t. That is quite a scary but also a quite liberating experience as you will see in today’s “SoCS post” *hidden grin*

This weeks prompt was “onomatopoeia”.

I have to admit, that onomatopoeia is a bit difficult for me in English as it is not my mother tongue. Much easier in German for me, but I am not sure I want to share my first thoughts about it with you.
Well, for better or for worse my dear readers you have to come with me in my little boudoir because the first word that came into my mind was “Plumps” or “plumpsen”. Leo translates “Plumps” with “thud” even though in my opinion it is rather and mix between “splash” and “thud”. You can of course “plumps” to the ground but in my opinion, you would rather “plumps” into a lake or the much dirtier version: into a privy. Have you ever been to one of those old-fashionedones with no water washing away everything discretely? I have.

Early Experiences in the Communist East of Germany

Parts of my family come from the East of Germany, and when I was young, I had the scary experience of entering the former GDR (German Democratic Republic (funny name considering how “democratic” THAT country was)) twice.
My great-uncle lived in a house with three or four flats in them, and as it happened, they never were able to install a water closet until the eighties I think. The reason being the lack of things that notoriously happened in the GDR not that they could not afford it. But maybe that was a reason too but as a 13 or 14-year-old you don’t really get these things.

“The “Plumpsklo” experience

So we had to go out of the front door of their apartment a flight of stairs down where the “Plumpsklo” (privy) was. You had to share it with the apartment underneath that didn’t make it a much better experience. But I was a child and it was pretty exotic to me even though I was scared as hell to go to the toilet at night.
Well, depending on how the “Plumpsklo” is working you can hear quite a nice “plumps” when your “sh..” falls. And I could not stop thinking about that when I heard Linda’s prompt. Event though I am sure the Greeks who gave us this wonderful word “onomatopoeia” had more sophisticated ways of doing the privy things!

How about taking part yourself (in SoCS of course LOL)?

Please head over to Linda’s prompt post about “onomatopoeia” and find more wonderful and weird Stream of Consciousness writing.
If you want to take part, then please follow these sugggestions (taken from Linda’s post):

1. Your post must be stream of consciousness writing, meaning no editing, (typos can be fixed) and minimal planning on what you’re going to write.
2. Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be. One sentence – one thousand words. Fact, fiction, poetry – it doesn’t matter. Just let the words carry you along until you’re ready to stop.
3. There will be a prompt every week. I will post the prompt here on my blog on Friday, along with a reminder for you to join in. The prompt will be one random thing, but it will not be a subject. For instance, I will not say “Write about dogs”; the prompt will be more like, “Make your first sentence a question,” or “Begin with the word ‘The’.”
4. Ping back! It’s important, so that I and other people can come and read your post! For example, in your post, you can write “This post is part of SoCS:” and then copy and paste the URL found in your address bar at the top of this post into yours.  Your link will show up in my comments, for everyone to see. The most recent pingbacks will be found at the top.
5. Read at least one other person’s blog who has linked back their post. Even better, read everyone’s! If you’re the first person to link back, you can check back later, or go to the previous week, by following my category, “Stream of Consciousness Saturday,” which you’ll find right below the “Like” button on my post.
6. Copy and paste the rules (if you’d like to) in your post. The more people who join in, the more new bloggers you’ll meet and the bigger your community will get!
7. Have fun!
