I start to think that we in Europe & in the North of the Americas think we are the centre of the universe and we invented the wheel.
But if you allow yourself to look over the edge of your plate you might discover that Africa has a long tradition of poetry & culture that predates our rise by centuries.
I encourage you to read the link which leads to an article about Muhammad Fanatil al-Hajaya on The Conversation
The West’s Crafty Men by Muhammad Fanatil al-Hajaya (2015)
The West’s crafty men laid a trap, and Putin fell in
They messed with his mind the way Spaniards mess with bulls
Putin went to save a man who slaughtered half his people
And the chaos is helping out the Balfour Declaration
The Persians are playing the same game:
Divvying up the land and the work and the roles
A conspiracy against the Arabs, so hard for us to bear
A dish of politics cooked up by one thousands specialists
For them we’re just a plate of food, their greed for which has increased
With our divided opinions and broken power
The Arabs’ Baghdad? A Zoroastrian hyena-wolf is tearing it to pieces
The Levant? Now a rabid bear’s slice of the pie
Lebanon? Nasrallah and Hezbollah are mangling it
Yemen? Contracted out to the Houthis
Every form of evil has been sowed in the Arabs’ lands
Sectarian strife has increased, and blood is being spilled in vain
Jerusalem? Our younger generations haven’t even heard of it
An old nakba is waiting for a cast of falcons
A world of injustice, convinced we Arabs have no rights
For that world, injustice is a principle, a way, a constitution
Oh Security Council, you’re also just a game
And I hereby witness that you’re a council of injustice and oppression
I feel if you want to understand the Arab world and its conflicts you need to allow yourself to see their point of view about the world and respect it as viable. Of course, we can keep believing that we bring peace & democracy everywhere but how did that work out in Afghanistan, Iraq & Libya? And the rest of the Arab world? And in our democracies, too. Where are the facts of this mythical peace & democracy our armies are supposed to bring? Take a minute to wonder about that if you can.
This song by En Vogue is one reason why I started to think about how we see ourselves and compare it to reality.
"Free Your Mind" by En Vogue (1992)
Prejudice, wrote a song about it.
Like to hear it? Here it go.
I wear tight clothing, high heeled shoes
It doesn't mean that I'm a prostitute, no no
I like rap music, wear hip hop clothes
That doesn't mean that I'm out sellin' dope no no
Oh my forgive me for having straight hair, no
It doesn't mean there's another blood in my heir yeah yeah
I might date another race or color
It doesn't mean I don't like my strong black brothers.
Why oh why must it be this way
Before you can read me you gotta learn how to see me, I said
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow.
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
So I'm a sistah
Buy things with cash
That really doesn't mean that all my credit's bad, oooh
So why dispute me and waste my time
Because you really think the price is high for me
I can't look without being watched, and oh
You rang my buy before I made up my mind, OW!
Oh now attitude, why even bother
I can't change your mind, you can't change my color
Why oh why must it be this way?
Before you can read me you gotta learn how to see me, I said
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow…
Why oh why must it be this way?
Before you can read me you gotta learn how to see me, I said
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow... FREE YOUR MIND!
(In englisch)
The West’s Crafty Men von Muhammad Fanatil al-Hajaya
„Free Your Mind“ von En Vogue
BEFREIE DEINEN GEIST!
A powerful work from Muhammad Fanatil al-Hajaya, you can taste the anger and bitterness.
Nearly ten years on and nothing has changed. The fact that very very rich and astute Arab princes are pulling some commercial strings in the West might suit the Irony of History but does not help those this poem was written for.

That’s how capitalism works, I assume. And that’s why nothing changes in my opinion. Most people are fighting the wrong enemies.

It is a depressing and very annoying business but studying the International Political situation and also the history of how any situation arose can be starkly enlightening.
At the bottom of many a tragedy lies the very grim Truth that there are a large number of ordinary people who wanted it ‘that way’.
We are a flawed species who default to conflict too quickly.
Many religions, humanist or ethical standpoint start with the basic… ‘Look within,’. Yet those words do not seem very popular.
